Just Let Your Soul Glow

Designer Jason Wu showed off a Spring 2009 collection of polished, ladylike looks that were fresh and sexy and colorful.

As deliciously girly as everything was, this picture caught my eye...

The dress is gorgeous (the floaty fabric, the detailed neckline, the saturated color--swoon), but I can't take my eyes off the model's radiant skin! Must she have used pounds of exfoliating sea salt and gallons of luminizing lotion to achieve it?

Or is it possible the knowing makeup artists backstage spritzed her lovely face with Sephora Brand's new "Tricks of the Trade" Radiance Mist before sending her out on the runway? 100% colorless and alcohol-free, this kiwi and citrus fruit-infused spray absorbs quickly into skin to refresh and rejuvenate and leave it glowing and fresh.

Sephora Brand has an entire line of "Tricks of the Trade" products, including Makeup Setting Mist and Anti-Shine Primer. Head to Sephora.com to view the collection.

Rachel Roy Spring 2009

Rachel Roy presented a fantastically dramatic Spring 2009 collection in New York today, including a slouchy backless T-shirt dress, detachable tulip skirts worn over slim pencil skirts, pajama-like silk blazers, and heavily embellished separates.

The entire collection was effortlessly elegant and--even though there were pieces with heavy embellishment or embroidery--it was completely wearable. I can just see myself dashing into the office in the creamy vanilla sheath with the words "Be the change you want to see in the world" stitched in French.

And if you're dying to know about all the wickedly sexy shoes, they're Manolo Blahnik for Rachel Roy!

MMM..Narciso Rodriguez Perfume..Oh, and Some Celebs

I attended a fashion show last week that was pretty typical of an L.A. celebrity event: A DJ spun the soundtrack, which ranged from Nikka Costa to Hall & Oates and back to some funk and soul from Soul II Soul and Dwele (it was pure genius!). Every trend that is on the "Hot for Fall" list (or will be by the time you finish reading this) was represented - from skinny jeans paired with puffy bombers and up-to-there leather boots to white mini frocks with black beading and studs (which I'm lov-ing, by the way). On a couch in front of me there was a certain celebutante powdering her nose before the photographers had their way with her; and milling around were dozens of (oddly) good-looking cocktail servers offering up drinks mixed with the alcoholic sponsor of the night. And then there was yours truly, sitting alone on a couch, wrist to nose, inhaling the intoxicating scent of the Narciso Rodriguez for Her I'd sprayed on before leaving the house that evening. I'm not even kidding! I was completely unaffected by the chaos that ensued when cast members of a popular NBC series started showing up and I couldn't care less about the photographers' bulbs flashing at the L.A. socialites seated next to me. I was in a deliciously delirious state of olfactory ecstasy, transfixed by the soft, velvety musky-yet-somehow-clean-and-floral fragrance perfection. Seriously, I couldn't get enough of myself. Oh, and the fashion show was great too.

Runways Fade to White

A New York Times article titled "Ignoring Diversity, Runways Fade to White" discussed how fewer and fewer designers are featuring black models on their runways during Fashion Weeks - we're talking around the world, not just New York. Here's an exerpt:

"Nowadays the cultural landscape is well populated with actors, musicians, media moguls and candidates for the American presidency drawn from the 30 percent of the American population that is not white. Yet, if there is one area where the lessons of chromatic and racial diversity have gone largely unheeded, it is fashion. This reality was never plainer than during the recent showings of the women’s spring 2008 collections in New York and Europe.

Of the 101 shows and presentations posted on Style.com during the New York runway season, which ended a month ago, more than a third employed no black models, according to Women’s Wear Daily. Most of the others used just one or two. When the fashion caravan moved to London, Paris and Milan, the most influential shows — from Prada to Jil Sander to Balenciaga to ChloĆ© and Chanel — made it appear as if someone had hung out a sign reading: No Blacks Need Apply."

This is disturbing on so many levels! I work at an online magazine geared at teenage girls, and my job is to report on fashion and beauty trends. It sickens me that I can so rarely speak to my own because there aren't enough images of us...

Earl's Girl

Okay, so maybe Joy Turner (left) from the NBC series My Name is Earl isn't the most savvy when it comes to fashion and style, but hopefully Jaime Pressly, the woman who portrays the smack-talking character on the hit show will have better luck in that department come Los Angeles Fashion Week. That's when the Emmy Award-winning actress plans to unveil her (nearly) eponymous, contemporary ready-to-wear line.

J'aime (a play on the French words that mean "I love..") will makes its debut on the runways at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Los Angeles on October 15. The actress will show around 35 to 40 styles for the spring season, including a range of dress silhouettes, wide-leg as well as slim pants, jackets, shorts, and a splash of trend-driven items. French designer Renee Bardot was brought on board to act as in-house design collaborator for J'aime, which will carry retail prices of $100 to $180.

In a market that has become saturated with (mostly disappointing) celebrity-designed collections, newcomers are faced with the challenge of turning skeptics (myself included) into believers. Pressly counts herself among those who hold the formula to do just that.

What do you think of these looks from J'aime by Jaime Pressly? Wearable or terrible? Style Goodies wants to hear from you!

Milla and Mango

We saw it first with Target's Go International campaign, featuring looks from innovators like Behnaz Sarafpour, Proenza Schouler, and Libertine. More recently, Gap recruited CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winners Thakoon, Rodarte, and Doo.Ri to put their respective spins on the classic, white, collar shirt for the Gap Design Editions campaign. Now, Milla Jovavich, model-turned-actress-turned-fashion designer, is doing her stylish thing with Mango, just in time for summer!

Milla and MNG is the new summer collection for Spanish retailer Mango, and the latest installment of a series of high-end designers creating looks for mass market retailers. Milla, one half of the eponymous line Jovavich-Hawk, designed twelve dresses for the chain, including a sweet, silk nightie-inspired number, a slinky modal minidress, and the ubiquitious maxi-dress. The designer's creative influence is most evident in the Peaches dress, which looks a lot like a Jovavich-Hawk dress seen on the Spring 2007 runway at New York Fashion Week. You can see the entire Milla and MNG collection here.

With its pale floral print and soft tiers, the Milla and MNG Peaches dress (left) is a less expensive version of the boho-chic Jovavich-Hawk dress.

Give Me Samora

One of my favorite labels is Samora, and her Fall 2007 Collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in L.A. did not disappoint. It was just the right mix of sweet and girly with sophisticated and chic. Her brilliant use of texture showed up in every gorgeous piece, and the sensual colors made the silhouettes even sexier. I absolutely fell in love with the puff-sleeves and shapely skirts and trousers.

I'm just dying for the return of brisk autumn mornings so I can don one of these lovely frocks with a sexy peeptoe pump and gloves - so ladylike, no?

Valley Girls

Sweet ruffles, striking metallics, chic berets, and of-the-moment silhouettes littered the runway in the Alvin Valley Fall 2007 Collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in L.A. The looks were ladylike and wearable, and included sheer blouses with pintucks, wide-leg trousers, swing coats, and fluid dresses. Among my favorites was a backless, silk blouse in eye-catching yellow.

Circus! Circus!

It was anything goes at the Ed Hardy Fall 2007 runway show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Los Angeles. Designer (and ringleader) Christian Audigier, who shows his eponymous line tonight, sent models down a bubblegum pink runway in his signature, tattoo-like graphics and electrifying colors, along with unexpected extras like painted-on mustaches, pink puppies, devil horns, and top hats, to name a few.
